Rose City Golf Course

Rose City Golf Course - Portland OregonThe Rose City Golf Course, which sits between the Roseway, Rose City Park, and Madison South neighborhoods, was purchased in 1923, and is the second oldest golf course in the city of Portland.

Prior to being developed as a full 18 hole golf course, the grounds were originally used as the Rose City Race Track where horse racing was held, complete with a large grandstand on the south side of the track that could hold several thousand spectators.  During the winter months, the horse barns and race track grounds were used to house the Al G Barnes and Barnum & Bailey circuses.

In what was to be one of the final times the grandstands were used before being declared unsafe, train tracks were laid from one side of the track to the other, and two steam locomotive engines were set up to collide during the American Legion 4th of July Celebration in 1924.

In 1937, the beautiful brick clubhouse (now known as the Hank Childs Golf Shop) was built as part of the New Deal Public Works Project.  It’s a great place to relax before or after a round on this classic, tree lined course that is both playable and challenging for players at all levels. Breakfast, lunch and snacks are served daily.

The Rose City Golf Course is a great course and very accessible from the surround neighborhoods.  If you’re a golfer, give it a try, you won’t be disappointed.
