The History of Roseway Neighborhood’s Tosis Restaurant
Family owned and named after the Greek owner Tosis Belesiotis, the Tosis (pronounced Tosh’is) Restaurant, located on 61st and Sandy, has become one of my favorite breakfast spots in the Roseway Neighborhood. My mechanic (Ken Van Damme) is directly across the street from the Tosis, so I actually look forward to getting my oil changes done knowing that I can walk across the street and eat a good breakfast while I wait.
The building was originally opened in 1946 as a Rutherford’s XXX Drive In, where the carhops would actually come out and sing to customers before taking their orders. Not many places around that provide that level of service anymore huh?
So, what’s with the unusual name? No it had nothing to do with the porn industry! Rutherford’s was named after a brand of root beer sold in the early 1900s. Each X was a rating, with one X standing for good, two X’s better, and three X’s best of all. Hence, Triple XXX. I’ve never even seen a bottle of XXX root beer, but apparently it’s still being produced. I’d love to get my hands on some and see how it compares to my current favorite root beer (Virgil’s).
So, next time you’re looking for a great place to take the family for breakfast (or lunch or dinner for that matter), give the Tosis a try. Maybe I’ll see you there!

My name is Jeff Bernheisel.
